Code of Conduct 

All users of the Bristol Connects platform must follow the guidance set out in our Code of Conduct and Volunteers Handbook.  For more information on reporting misconduct please see our help guide: https://www.bristol.aluminate.net/app/community/help-guides.  

Terms of Use 

These terms apply to the entire content of this web site. If you do not accept these terms, please do not use this web site. The University of Bristol (the "University") updates these terms from time to time and any changes will be effective immediately on being set out here. You further agree that these terms are also enforceable by our supplier, Aluminati Network Group Ltd ("Aluminati"), who host these pages on our behalf. Aluminati are acting under instruction as the University’s Data Processor under the Data Protection Act. Aluminati will process personal data strictly for the purposes of operating this service.   Aluminati is registered with the Information Commissioner under membership number Z8393842.  Aluminati are a trusted third party partner of the University and contractually bound to provide this service to the University and our alumni, students and supporters.  Bristol Connects allows users to update their details online, access a directory of Bristol alumni, and, subject to an individual registrant’s authorisation, participate in programmes that connect users for the purpose of sharing careers advice and/or advice on study at Bristol. In order to provide you with the most appropriate services, some of this data may also be held in the University’s alumni database. Both the University and Aluminati undertake to handle your private information responsibly and in accordance with their respective duties under the most up to date UK legislation.

Use of the web site  

Please note that some areas of this web site are available only to University staff, students, alumni and/or other authorised University users. The use of this website by members of the University is subject to the University’s IT Policies and Guidelines. You must not use this web site or any facilities or information which are available through it to: Commit or encourage unlawful acts or acts which breach of these terms of use; Misrepresent your identity; Hack, or attempt to hack, any part of the web site or any system used to run it; Store personal data derived from the web site; Post material that is obscene, offensive, or otherwise unlawful; Technically harm the web site and/or its systems (including, without limitation, computer viruses or malicious software or harmful data). While the University tries to make this web site available 24 hours a day, it reserves the right to suspend or withdraw access, without notice, to either the whole or part of the web site, for any reason. 

Accessing our site  

Your user password and any other piece of information provided as part of our security procedures is confidential. You must not disclose it to any third party. You are responsible for making all arrangements necessary for you to have access to the site. You are also responsible for ensuring that all persons who access the site through your internet connection are aware of these conditions and comply with them. Access to the site is always at the University’s discretion and the University may withdraw or amend the services provided on the site without notice. From time to time the University may restrict access to some or all users to some or all parts of the site and sometimes the site may be unavailable. You use the site and the internet in general at your own risk. We use reasonable efforts to ensure the continuous operation and availability of the site and we use technologies to keep users' data safe and accurate but we cannot and do not guarantee these things. Where possible we will post advance notice on the site where downtime is scheduled for maintenance. As is normal, you note the need to maintain backup copies of any important data. Whilst the University aims to update its site regularly the content on the site may be out of date at any given time. If the University determines that you have breached any of these conditions, it may take such action as it deems appropriate, including disabling your password whether chosen by you or allocated by us. You agree to indemnify us for all claims brought by a third party against us arising out of or in connection with any breach by you of any warranty set out in the conditions.

Information about you and your visits to our site  

Bristol Connects contains a directory of all University of Bristol graduates which contains their name and course details.  Through using the service and creating a profile, certain information provided by you (including your name, personal headline, biography, professional history, education details, email address and LinkedIn profile) will be accessible by other individuals who have registered for the Bristol Connects (depending on what information you choose to share). These may be students, staff, alumni or those who hold an offer to study at Bristol. If the University holds an email address for you users will also be able to send you messages within the system, regardless of whether you choose to share your email address. The reason for this is to allow users of the Bristol Connects, including alumni and students, to make connections relevant to their interests. Bristol Connects acts as a messaging forwarding service but your email address itself will remain anonymous to other users unless you choose to share it.   

Any information you submit to this website will also be visible to authorised University staff users (for the purpose of managing the service), as well as Aluminati employees. The University processes information about you in accordance with our privacy policy which forms part of these conditions, and in accordance with the University's Data Protection Policy. By using our site, you consent to such processing which is required to provide the service and warrant that all data you provide is true and accurate.  If you partake in any mentoring schemes offered as part of Bristol Connects, additional terms and conditions apply.  You will be presented with these upon accessing the mentoring area of the service and must agree to these before you can continue. 

Bristol Connects is one aspect of the University’s alumni and supporter engagement programme.  As such, the University will also process information collected as part of users’ interactions with the platform to: 

  • keep you up to date with news and progress regarding the University, including alumni events; 

  • promote alumni and friends activities and programmes; 

  • further our charitable aims, including a range of fundraising programmes such as direct marketing (for example receipt of University publications), telephone and email fundraising; 

  • provide you with any services you have requested and the promotion of benefits and services.

Governing Law and Jurisdiction  

These terms of use are governed by English law. Disputes arising in connection with them shall be subject to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts.  

Miscellaneous 

No waiver by the University of any breach of these terms by you shall be considered as a waiver of any subsequent breach of the same or of any other provision. If, at any time, any provision of these terms is or becomes invalid or illegal in any respect, such provision shall be deemed to be severed from the terms, but the validity and enforceability of the remaining provisions shall not be affected as a result. 

Particular terms and conditions for the Career Expert Module 

Alumni volunteering as a Career Expert 

  • I understand that as a Career Expert participating in the Bristol Connects Career Expert module, any advice I provide in the course of contact with a user is solely for the purpose of guiding them in their career.  

  • I understand this relationship is an educational resource to discuss career issues confronted by the user and my role is to provide relevant advice and suggestions. 

  • I understand that the beneficiary will not rely upon my advice and/or statements as legal advice, nor as a substitute for their own independent judgment or professional opinions.  

  • I understand that the sole involvement of the University of Bristol and Development and Alumni Relations Office will be to verify that the users of the module are either current University of Bristol students or University of Bristol alumni and that the University of Bristol has no further role in the relationship. 

  • Bristol Connects may provide a platform for students and graduates seeking work experience, job shadowing, internships or employment with alumni who can offer or broker these opportunities within their organisation. These opportunities are not managed by the University and alumni should seek local advice from their organisation before offering these opportunities. 

  • I understand and agree this programme is not intended for solicitation purposes, i.e. Career Experts should not request payment for any advice rendered.  

  • I hereby agree that in no event will I file suit or otherwise attempt to hold liable for damages, the University of Bristol, any Career Expert, beneficiary, alumnus or member of staff of the University of Bristol as a result of my use of this module.  

  • As a participant in the Bristol Connects Career Expert module, I agree to indemnify and hold harmless the University of Bristol and its members and staff from any and all claims, suits, actions or proceedings of any kind arising out of, or in connection with my participation in the Bristol Connects Career Expert module.  

  • I understand that either party may terminate their involvement in the Bristol Connects Career Expert module at any time without notice or liability. The University of Bristol may contact users of the module to gather feedback on their experience and give them relevant information on the module.  

Students and Alumni receiving advice from Career Experts 

  • I understand that as a contact participating in the Programme, any advice I receive in the course of the Career Expert relationship is solely for the purpose of guiding me in my career.  

  • I understand this relationship is an educational resource to discuss career issues confronted by me and to receive relevant advice and suggestions from my Career Expert.  

  • I agree that I will not rely upon the Career Expert's advice and/or statements as legal advice nor as a substitute for my own independent judgment or professional opinions. 

  • I understand that the sole involvement of the service team and its office will be to verify that the Career Experts are current members and that the service has no further role in the career expert and contact relationship. I understand that it is my sole responsibility to assess the professionalism, credentials and references of the Career Expert. 

  • I understand that my involvement in this module and any interactions with alumni have no bearing on my study and qualification at the University of Bristol. 

  • The University of Bristol may contact users of the module to gather feedback on their experience and give them relevant information on the module.
